Best Photo Locations in San Antonio: Natural + Urban Favorites

One of the first questions I hear after someone books a portrait session is:

“Where should we take our photos?”

The good news is that San Antonio has so many beautiful options.

Whether you love big oak trees and open fields, modern architecture, colorful gardens, historic neighborhoods, or something with a little Texas character, there’s a location that can complement the look and feel you want for your photographs.

As a San Antonio photographer, I’ve photographed families, seniors, maternity sessions, couples, and weddings throughout the area, and these are some of my favorite places to create natural, timeless portraits.

The best location isn’t necessarily the most elaborate one—it’s the one that fits your personality, wardrobe, family, and the feeling you want your photographs to have.

Let’s take a look at some of my favorites.

Phil Hardberger Park

8400 NW Military Hwy, San Antonio, TX

If you love a natural, relaxed look, Phil Hardberger Park is one of my favorite options.

The park offers scenic trails, open spaces, and beautiful mature oak trees, giving us plenty of variety without needing to travel between locations.

It works especially well for:

• Family portraits
• Maternity sessions
• Senior portraits
• Couples

I especially love this location for evening sessions when the softer light filters through the trees.

The look: Natural, relaxed, timeless and distinctly Texas.

Cibolo Nature Center

140 City Park Rd, Boerne, TX

For clients who love a true Hill Country feel, Cibolo Nature Center offers one of the most varied natural settings on my list.

You can find river views, open fields and beautiful mature trees all within the same area. My current location guide also notes a photography permit fee for this location.

This is a beautiful choice for:

• Family sessions
• Maternity portraits
• Seniors
• Engagements
• Couples

Because there are several different landscapes available, we can create a gallery that feels much more varied while still staying in one location.

The look: Hill Country, natural, romantic and earthy.

Looking for Something More Urban?

Not every portrait session needs an open field.

If you love architecture, textured backgrounds and a more modern feel, San Antonio has some wonderful urban options.

The Pearl

The Pearl area gives us an entirely different look from San Antonio’s parks and nature trails.

My location guide highlights the area around 303 Pearl Parkway for its modern, urban character and its connection to the San Antonio River Walk.

Here we can incorporate:

• Brick
• Interesting architecture
• Walkways
• Urban textures
• River Walk scenery

It’s particularly good for senior portraits, couples, engagements, headshots and anyone who wants something a little more contemporary.

The look: Modern, polished, urban and full of character.

Confluence Park

310 W Mitchell St, San Antonio, TX

Confluence Park is one of my favorites when someone wants something modern without giving up the natural surroundings.

The greenspace combines landscaped walking and biking paths along the river with native plants and striking architectural structures.

That combination gives us opportunities to create photographs that feel both organic and contemporary.

It’s great for:

• Seniors
• Couples
• Engagement photos
• Maternity sessions
• Modern family portraits

The look: Contemporary, architectural and natural.

So, Which Location Should You Choose?

You definitely don’t have to make this decision alone.
