Family photos don’t have to feel stiff or stressful. With a little planning, your San Antonio family photoshoot can feel relaxed, natural, and genuinely fun.

The goal isn’t to make everyone behave perfectly or hold a smile for an hour. It’s to create photographs that show your family as you are right now—the laughs, the personalities, the connections, and even some of the beautifully imperfect moments in between.

Whether this is your first professional family session or something you do every year, these tips will help you arrive feeling prepared and ready to enjoy the experience.

Choose a Session That Fits Your Family

Not every family needs the same amount of photography time.

Families with younger children often do best when the session keeps moving and doesn’t feel overly structured. Other families may want more time for a variety of combinations, individual portraits of the children, or a larger gallery of images.

Think about what you ultimately want from your photographs. Are you hoping for a few updated images for your walls or holiday cards? Or do you want a full gallery that documents your family with plenty of variety?

Choosing the right session length gives everyone enough time to settle in without making the experience feel rushed. You can explore my San Antonio family photography sessions to compare the options.

Plan Around Your Children

One of the best things you can do before your family photoshoot is choose a time when your children are typically happiest.

Try not to schedule around nap time, immediately after school, or during a time of day when you already know everyone tends to be tired. Make sure everyone has eaten before arriving, and bring water and a simple snack for younger children if needed.

Most importantly, don’t spend the drive to your session telling your kids they need to “be good” or “smile for the photographer.”

I don’t expect children to sit perfectly still. Movement, games, talking, exploring, and letting kids be themselves often create some of the photographs families love most.

Coordinate Your Outfits Without Matching

You don’t need everyone wearing identical outfits to create a beautiful family portrait.

Instead, choose two or three complementary colors and build everyone’s clothing around that palette. Neutrals, earth tones, soft colors, and subtle textures photograph beautifully in many of the outdoor locations around San Antonio and the Texas Hill Country.

Try to avoid large logos, neon colors, and extremely busy patterns that may pull attention away from your faces.

And above everything else, make sure everyone feels comfortable. If your child hates the outfit before you leave the house, chances are they’re still going to hate it when we start taking pictures.

Choose the Right San Antonio Location

The location helps set the overall feeling of your session.

Some families love open fields and natural landscapes, while others prefer large trees, historic architecture, urban textures, or something with more of a Texas Hill Country feel.

I help my clients choose locations based on the season, the age of their children, the style they love, and the overall look they want from their gallery.

The right location should complement your family—not compete with you. And because San Antonio light can be harsh during the middle of the day, most outdoor family sessions are scheduled when the light is softer and more flattering.

You Don’t Need to Know How to Pose

One of the most common concerns I hear is, “We have no idea what to do in front of the camera.”

That’s completely normal. You don’t need to arrive knowing where to put your hands or how to position everyone.

I’ll guide you into flattering arrangements when we need a more traditional family portrait, but we’ll also use movement and prompts to create photographs that feel more natural.

You might walk together, snuggle with your children, talk, play, or simply interact. The goal is to create a mix of the photographs grandparents want for the wall and the candid images that show what your family actually feels like together.

Don’t Worry If Your Kids Aren’t Perfect

They won’t be—and that’s okay.

A toddler may need a break. Someone may decide they’re suddenly done taking pictures. A child may want to explore instead of looking at the camera.

I’ve photographed families long enough to know that forcing a child through a session rarely produces the expressions parents actually want.

Instead, we adjust. Sometimes that means changing what we’re doing, adding movement, letting a child explore for a few minutes, or photographing another combination while someone takes a break.

Your children don’t have to perform for the camera to create beautiful family portraits.

Bring the Things That Matter—But Keep It Simple

You generally don’t need a trunk full of props for your family session. Your family is the focus.

If there is something meaningful you want included—a favorite blanket, a child’s special toy, a family heirloom, or something connected to an important milestone—bring it.

Otherwise, I prefer to keep things simple and let connection, personality, and the environment tell the story.

Give Yourself Extra Time

Nothing makes a family photoshoot feel stressful faster than rushing out the door.

Have clothing ready beforehand, give yourself extra travel time, and plan to arrive a few minutes early. That little bit of breathing room helps everyone start the session feeling much more relaxed.

And parents: you don’t have to spend the entire session making sure everyone is looking at me. That’s my job. Your job is to enjoy your family.

What Happens After Your Family Photoshoot?

After your session, your images are professionally edited and prepared for your online gallery.

When your gallery is ready, you’ll be able to view your photographs, download your included images, share them with family, and decide how you’d like to display your favorites.

Print the images you love. Put them on your walls. Create an album. Send them to the grandparents.

Professional family photographs shouldn’t disappear into your camera roll—they should become part of your family’s story.
